about

Dripping Earth, a sprawling and ambitious project of 24 different Impressionistic variants of a single hour-long piece. Conceptually, the idea originated with Night's Moisture, a six-hour seamless piece of organic electronics built with procedural generation, which could be considered a prototype for Dripping Earth. Night's Moisture was created to last through the 6 hours a night my daughter Penelope was typically sleeping at the time, intended for a single nightly atmosphere meant for continual subconscious stimulation and physical relaxation. Dripping Earth expands on this idea to produce specifically modeled rhythms, tones, textures and frequencies for a specific hour of the 24 hour day. My current studio has a lot of possibilities, but recording a seamless 24 hour piece didn't seem very possible (Night's Moisture was a huge amount of work to produce, technically speaking), so I circumvented that problem with 24 different pieces, each their own little world, while still existing within a larger landscape. Inspired also by Monet's near-infinite permutations of the Rouen cathedral in different grades of sunlight, Dripping Earth explores 24 different parallel-universes from the same single vantage point - a humid Spring day in my Carolinian backyard. In this way, it is essentially a study of how listening to a piece of music in the morning versus the evening would change your perception of what it is, and then taking note of those differences and implementing specific sets of alterations to (hopefully) make the most out of every minute of every hour in the day. These pieces can also obviously be taken in on their own, as I worked quite hard to make sure they all retained a large amount of individual character. Think of them not as mirror-reflections of each other, or even siblings, but as seasons changing, temperatures shifting, colors blending. Dripping Earth is a massive amount of music, data and information to process, so I leave it wholly up to you, the listener, to determine where and when and how you want to experience it. It has been optimized in every possible way for personal use in the home, as a room enhancer, as a sleep aid, a travel companion, a backdrop to an open window, a mood setter for a good book or even just a headphone odyssey for you to walk through your part of the world with.
